Suggest Treatment For Pain In The Wrists And Thumb

Question: I am experiencing pain in my wrists and thumb areas. A dull pain below my right thumb and surrounding the base of my right thumb. The pain sometimes extends past my wrists intermittently. I have been using a iPad with a small keyboard that I purchased a few weeks ago that has seem to worsen my his condition but I can't be sure. There is a warning label on the keyboard that states if physical pain occurs to stop and see a physician. When I bought that I thought that odd because what does typing on the keyboard have to do with pain? For years I used a desk computer in my work also. But this issue seem to begin to occur several months back when I was taking an aerobic combined weight training class that used weight bearing exercises consecutively to music for 1 hour. These positions were repeated several times. Weeks after this I began to notice that my thumb area was sore in my right hand. I rested then continued these classes and tried to modify the way I held the weights with my hands. I also tried to wear a wrist band. There was temporary improvement up until I got the iPad and began using it. Is this a coincidence? Is this worsened when I type on computer keyboards? A doctor said beginnings of Carpal tunnel. I have small wrists, and always felt them to be the weakest when it cam e to exercises that bore weight on them.

Brief Answer:
arthritis of the thumb and wrist

Thank you for contacting HCM with your health care concerns

I am sorryt o hear that you are experiencing pain at the base of the thumb and wrist area. the most likely problem is arthritis. The first place arthritis hits is the base of the thumb and wrist. the reason it has started after the new iPad is the change in your typing habits and that is putting more stress on the joint. You can take medications like tylenol or NSAIDs like ibuprofen. These medications will help the pain but will not change the course of the arthritis. We have absolutely nothing that will halt or reduce the progression of osteoarthritis. Use of topical medication will help to an extent but again will not change the course. I would also recommend not using the iPad and going back to your desk top and regular keyboard as this may reduce joint stress.

thank you for your precise answer. I thought it might be arthritis. It's just that it came on rather suddenly which gave me the impression it was actually more like an injury then a condition.I'm not familiar with its "course" as you mentioned. What happens in time? Is this a particular form of arthritis ?

Brief Answer:
Arthritis

Detailed Answer:
The usual course of the condition is increasing pain some swelling and redness to the joint and eventually destruction of the joint with joint deformities. As long as you stay active with your hands there will be very little disability to the fingers. If you stop doing things with your hands and fingers that is when the deformities actually get worse. The course is over years and decades so this is not going to change things right now. Treatment is pain control. This type of arthritis is called osteoarthritis
