Question: Average life expectancy for a 77 yr old female with a GFR of 37. Try my best to eliminate sodium, need pain relief for arthritis in neck, back and hands. Have costocondritis and fibromyalgia-- hence took way to much Advil and her kin over the years. Just need to do some realistic planning for future goals and medical realities.

Brief Answer:
Life expectency is not predictable

Detailed Answer:
Hi ,

the extent of renal failure is moderate and if the cause of renal failure is painkiller use then with adequate control of blood pressure and use of sodium bicarbonate and vitamin d . the kidney should last around 5 to 6 yrs if we take that kidney will loose 3 to 5 ml gfr for each year. though this is influenced by lot of other factors.

But we should realize this is life of kidney and not of patient. the patient is likely to survive more with the help of dialysis. an average survival of 3 to 5 years on that as well even if the kidney completely fails.

in spite of these treatments we understand that the cause of death in these patients is not renal failure but heart disease or infections with can complicate the present situation anytime.

best wishes
