Suggest Treatment For Pain And Stiffness In The Muscles

default
Posted on Wed, 28 Jun 2017
Question: Three years ago I developed muscle pain that mostly appeared at night. In the mornings I awoke sore all over and had a difficult time sleeping. Since then it has progressed to musculoskeletal pain and getting worse. A complete blood work has been done with negative results. The pain has become constant. Presently it is located in my hips, neck and shoulders; although it tends to move around especially at night. When I sit for awhile my legs and hips seem to lock-up. I get a tremendous amount of stiffness and have difficulty getting up. I am an active person but my mobility is starting to become limited. I am 77 years old. Please tell me what you think is the problem. Thanks

Dear Dr. Sundar:
I am not on statins nor steroids or ibuprofen. I only take one ibuprofen tablet at night to help me sleep. Initially I was on ibuprofen for several months and then I was given steroids for approximately five months. It has been at least six months since I have taken any medication for my condition. I have not had any x-rays or a brain MRI. Please let me know how I should proceed.

Briefly, what do think "might" be the problem? What do you anticipate the x-ray will reveal? Also I will mention it again, a complete blood work was done previously. It was done twice: first when reviewing my condition with my general physician and later when I visited a rheumatologist. Neither time was any abnormality found in the blood work. They took 10 to 12 measurements. Tomorrow I have an appointment with my doctor at Kaiser Permanente to review my condition.

Thank you for your help.

Detailed Answer:
Hi, The blood tests I have mentioned are to detect immunological and Rheumatoid problems. If any are already done, they need not be repeated.
Digital x-ray spine is to detect ankylosing spondylitis.
All the best with your appointment with rheumatologist. I am sure he too has considered all the points raised by me--but sometimes two minds do help.

Dr. XXXXXXX thank you!
You are right two minds are better than one and that is why I sought your help. The blood tests you requested were in the "normal" range with the exception of HLA and LFT. The two Rheumatoid blood test markers were normal. The HLA and LFT were not done but I will discuss them tomorrow with the doctor. I appreciate all your help - thank you.

Sincerely, XXXXXXX XXXX
