Suggest Treatment For Pain And Stiffness In Neck While Having Bulging Disc

default
Posted on Fri, 17 Jun 2016
Question: Hi! I have question about left sided pain and occasional stiffness that comes and goes. It has been going on about a year and sometimes is more intense than other times. Dull pain and stiffness is only on left side and right now I have another flare up. I cant name base of pain but it seems to be in jaw and cheek, in left side of neck and little on the back of neck, in shoulder and a lot in upper arm, aslo in elbow and sometimes palm. Sometimes I feel it on the left side of abdomen. Sometimes like right now I feel it in inner thigh but mostly in calf and knee. mostly it is only in neck and arm but like said sometimes all left side of body is affected. I wouldn't say it is numbness but more like dull pain that is not intense but bothersome (about 3 in 10 scale). I do get occasional headaches but only like twice in month.
No fever, my stress levels are little elevated but when I feel that pain then I am more anxcious. I do have diabetes 2 and little elevated blood pressure.
What can it be... could it be spine or neck related? heart related? or maybe brain issue? My memory and all cognitive skills are above average. Or can it be bottom tooth related that gives me issues occasionally? left sided issues have been with me last 5 years but have got more intense lately
Please help

I would explain as follows:

Detailed Answer:
Hello!

Thank you for asking on HCM!

I understand your concern and would explain that your symptoms could be related to different disorders:

1- A cervical column bulging disc causing radicular pain or compression of the spinal medulla. A cervical spine X ray followed by a cervical spine MRI may be needed.
2- A brain disorder affecting the basal ganglia or cortical lesion. A brain MRI may be needed to rule in/out this possible disorder. You can perform brain and cervical spine MRI as one only examination.
3- Anxiety. If all the above tests result normal, anxiety should be considered the main cause of your symptoms.

You should discuss with your doctor on the above issues.

Hope to have been helpful!

Kind regards,

Dr. Iliri
