default
Posted on Tue, 11 Oct 2016
Question: Been taking ibuprofen consistently (not abusing) daily for almost two years. Been having pains in abdomen on and off for last few days. Noticeable bloating has occurred after eating lunch today (like jeans suddenly became very tight and they are not usually. I had sushi for lunch and did not eat to excess. Am worried it is something more serious then like IBS flair up. How do I know when to go to ER?

Brief Answer:
when the symptom are different or persistent

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

an individual with irritable bowel syndrome always has this dilemma. A simple (but not easy to do) suggestion is to go to the ER when the symptoms are different. 'Different' can be defined as abdominal pain of severe intensity or persistent or unusual (does not remind of any previous event of pain).

Ibuprofen use does not seem relevant. I should add though that using ibuprofen so often increases the risk for side effects and you should avoid it. Daily usage is too much for someone in your age.

So in conclusion, if you feel like your abdomen is full of gas and you find partial (or complete) relief in passing gas or stool then this is probably another irritable bowel syndrome attack. Recognizing the pattern of the discomfort should allay the concerns. Otherwise visiting the ER is warranted to exclude more serious causes of discomfort.

I hope it helps!
