Posted on Thu, 16 Feb 2017
Question: Hi doctor,
I am 36 i am a bit obese and i used IUD for the last 2 years. My last period was on 16 dec 2016. On 24 dec and 1 XXXXXXX i had unprotected sex with my bf but he used withdrawal method. On 9 XXXXXXX i had light cramps that come and go so when i wipe my genital i can see a very light bleeding. This condition lasted for 2 days. After that no more bleeding no cramps until last saturday 21 XXXXXXX i had cramps again and i can see brown discharge when i wipe my genital. On 23 XXXXXXX i had unprotected sex again. My period supposedly has come by now but instead of period I still had brown discharge until today and sometimes when i wipe my genital there's light bleeding. Today i took preg test and it's negative
Is it possible that i am pregnant? Or is it my period that i am having right now

Brief Answer:
Hormonal dysfunction should be ruled out

Detailed Answer:
Hi dear,
I have gone through your question and understand your concerns.
Sometimes, the bleeding can occur irregularly or scanty sometimes on IUD.
Moreover, hormonal disturbances can also cause scanty periods.
If the urine pregnancy test is negative, then the pregnancy is ruled out.
I will suggest you to observe your menstrual flow for next 2 cycles.
If scanty, then you should get your thyroid hormone and prolactin levels tested and get further treatment accordingly.
Hope you found the answer helpful.

Brief Answer:
Ectopic pregnancy unlikely

Detailed Answer:
Hi dear, you should look both for the flow and regularity.
Pregnancy test is positive in ectopic pregnancy also.
However, you can get an ultrasound to rule out any ectopic pregnancy.
