Question: I'm 77 and I was reading in bed and noticed that my toes on my right foot were numb. Later, I got up and my right leg, torso and arm were somewhat numb. What could cause this condition?

Brief Answer:
Could be due to one posture or indicative of underlying disease.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Welcome to health care magic,

If this numb sensation over toes, right leg, torso and arm is not troubling your day to day life or it has occurred occasionally then there no need to worry much, because in many cases no apparent cause can be found to explain such numbness.

However, sometimes this numb sensations persist longer then they may be associated with few medical conditions such as:

1) remaining in one posture for a long time
2) lack of blood supply to the particular area
3) Diabetes, thyroid state or vitamin B12 and D3 deficiency.
4) Spinal nerve root compression like cervical radiculopathy

So if this feeling is constant and troublesome then you need to see physician who will examine you thoroughly with complete medical history and order relevant investigations like,

1. Hemoglobin levels.
2. Blood sugar levels ( Fasting and PP ).
3. Vitamin B12 levels.
4. Vitamin D3 levels.
5. Lipid profile.
6. Thyroid profile.
7. Serum electrolytes.
8. Serum Calcium.
9.Nerve conduction study.
10.MRI scan

But there is no need to be worried like I said in most cases the causes are benign and don't need treatment.

Hope this will help you how to proceed further.Let me know if you have any more clarifications.
