Suggest Treatment For Nausea, Diarrhea And Fever

default
Posted on Mon, 11 Jul 2016
Question: I have had nausea, cramping and diarrhea for a week now. No vomiting or fever. It started about 2-3 hours after eating out. I thought it might be staph but it's lasted too long. Also, I have Irritable Bowel Syndrome and have had similar symptoms like this a couple times a year. Any thoughts as to what it might be?

Brief Answer:
Explained

Detailed Answer:
Hello and Welcome

I appreciate your concern

Based on your description, Infectious diarrhea should be ruled out first. If there is evidence of a raised TLC , blood in stool and tenesmus then empiric antibiotics can be initiated and stool culture be taken at the time for adjustment of the choice of antibiotics based on the culture results.

For the time being , oral isotonic fluids should be continued to avoid dehydration. If there is no evidence of infectious diarrhea then Rifaximin and sucralfate can be advised for a period 2 weeks to see for empiric improvement in symptoms. Mebeverine or hyoscine butylbromide would be a good choice as an antispasmodic.

Wishing you best of health

Thanks
