Posted on Tue, 31 Mar 2015
Question: My 21 year old son has had a little nausea and after eating some dill pickles and some Italian pasta took his daily dose of wellbutrin and lexapro. He threw the pills back up and had a terrible taste in his mouth. He then took a peppermint tab to get rid of the taste. Now his tongue is numb and he said it feels a little sore to swallow.

Brief Answer:
Gastrointestinal infection can be the reason.

Detailed Answer:
Hello!

Thank you for the query.
His symptoms most likely indicate mild gastrointestinal infection. It can be
caused by virus or bacteria. Most of such infections go away by its own and no need to consult a doctor.
However, if such nausea and vomiting will be present for longer than 48 hours, or he will have high fever, blood in stool, intense diarrhea, strong abdominal pain, he should consult a doctor.

If he has abdominal pain along with nausea, other reasons like gallstones, peptic ulcer should be also considered.

Here is what he should do:
- avoid any solid foods for 12 hours
- drink plenty of liquids
- start probiotic intake
- after 12-24 hours he should start eating (soft diet should be started)

If the symptoms won go away, abdominal ultrasound, blood work, liver tests, urine analysis, stool tests should be done. Gastroscopy should be considered.

Hope this will help. Feel free to ask further questions.
Regards.

He may have such symptom due to vomiting. Just wait with any concern. Only if it will stay like that for some time, should be checked.
So just give him some time and rest.
