default
Posted on Thu, 3 Nov 2016
Question: My husband had a catheter taken out at 9:30 a.m. This morning..after about 20 minutes he had acute nausea, threw up 4 times, had a fever developed...He has slept for almost 8 hours and tried to urinate 2 or 3 times..The last time he tried to urinate he got a couple of dribbles.. The fever comes and goes.. He was catherized 10 days ago.. What should we do and why is this happening? When they drained him with the catheter 10 days ago...they got over a liter of urine mixed with blood and a little tissue..He had not urinated in over 48 hours..

Brief Answer:
Considerations.

Detailed Answer:
hello and thanks for sending the query.

I would recommend that you contact his physician as soon as possible. If he is not able to urinate it suggests that he may be obstructed again.

He may need to have a catheter placed again.

The catheter may have irritated the lining of his bladder which could explain the nausea he had when the catheter was removed.

As for the fever. we must assume a possible underlying urinary tract infection until proven otherwise.

Ideally, a urinalysis and culture should be done to rule out UTI.

A Followup with his doctor to address the inability to urinate is most important.

Thank you for sending the query.

Sincerely,

Dr Galamaga.
