Suggest Treatment For Mild Concussion Post An Accident

Question: Hi,

I was walking through my bathroom in the dark yesterday evening and ran into the corner of the shower door with my head. It hurt really bad for around 15 minutes and I developed a bump on my head. I felt a little bit dizzy after for a bit, but slept well last night. I woke up this morning and feel relatively normal. My head is tender and I have a small bump at the spot, but I also feel a little bit woozy. Could this be a brain hemorrhage or mild concussion? I am not sure if I should go to the ER?

Brief Answer:
No need to go to the ER

Detailed Answer:
I read your question carefully and I understand your concern.

Judging from that description the worst thing to fear (if anything at all) would be a mild concussion. There is no indication of a brain hemorrhage from your symptoms. The intensity of the traumatic event and you being a young (I presume healthy) individual, makes it very unlikely to be the case.

I do not think there is any need to go to the ER. That would be necessary if there was a doubt for a hemorrhage which would require urgent imaging exams. Since that doesn't seem to be the case there is not much to gain by going there. I would recommend simply some physical and mental rest for the next few days.

I remain at your disposal for other questions.

Should i not be worried about the woozy feeling?

Brief Answer:
Read below

Detailed Answer:
The woozy feeling is the only reason I mentioned the possibility of a mild concussion and recommended some rest, otherwise I would say to continue normal activity as there was nothing wrong. A concussion can leave symptoms of dizziness, mild confusion, memory loss, concentration difficulties, headache etc for some time. So the woozy feeling should be in that setting.
There is no specific medication or procedure about it, only resting. Symptoms depending on the degree of the concussion may last even for weeks and months, but as I said given the mild trauma, the lack of other symptoms I believe it is a mild case and symptoms shouldn't persist for long.

Symptoms which would indicate a more serious brain lesion like a hemorrhage and would warrant urgent attention include intense or progressively increasing headache with nausea and vomiting, double vision or visual loss, weakness or numbness of the limbs on one side, seizures, confusion or changes in behavior noted by others. Serious complications happen mostly in the first 24 hours, so it would be wise to have someone around you for that time in case those symptoms appear, but I would say it to be very unlikely for that type of trauma, no need to panic.

Hi!

I am still worried. My head is feeling normal, but i still feel kind of "foggy" mentally. Could there be a slow brain bleed? I am very worried. Besides the fogginess, i dont have any other symtoms .

Brief Answer:
Bleed unlikely

Detailed Answer:
Hello again! I am sorry you still aren't feeling your normal self.

I still do not see any indication of a brain bleed. It is true that there are some rare cases where there may be a slow bleed beyond the first 48 hours, but that usually is in older individuals with fragile blood vessels or coagulation issues where the clotting process is defective. So given in addition the absence of any new symptoms I would still hold it very very unlikely.

In concussion meanwhile as I said before some symptoms may persist for a while, fogginess being such a symptom. So it is a much more likely explanation.

I hope to have been of help.
