default
Posted on Thu, 18 Feb 2016
Question: I twisted my knee about a week ago and I am in quite a bit if pain, I went to the local walk in clinic and they thought that it might be a meniscus tear because the pain is on the inside portion if the knee. I am seeing an orthopedic surgeon Wednesday. The walk in center gave me a knee brace and crutches. How likely would it be that I require surgery?

Brief Answer:
Meniscus tear may need arthroscopic surgery

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
I have studied your case and it is difficult to tell if you will need surgery. If on MRI you have a grade 3 meniscus tear then surgery is only solution. If there is grade 1 or 2 tear then you can wait and watch. Meniscus tear at 50 years of age are usually associated with degenerative changes. Without surgery they heal well. Only if they causes severe pain or locking of knee then you need surgery.
Surgery is done through arthroscopy and you can be discharged on same or next day. There is no need for bed rest.
I hope this answer will be useful for you. let me know if there is any other followup questions. thanks
