Question: Hi. Just wondering. If I'm in the same room with a coworker who has suspected meningitis (according to his doctor) what is the likelihood of contracting the disease myself? I'm also concerned because we work at an airport and wonder if we should contact the airport office if it does turn out he has this disease.

Brief Answer:
Prolonged close contacts can make it contagious.

Detailed Answer:
Hi xxxxxxxxxxxx,
Thanks for being on healthcaremagic.com.
I am Dr.Ajay Panwar,a neurologist, here to answer your query.

In usual scenarios, meningitis is not contagious. However, prolonged close contacts like kissing may transmit some of the bacteria causing meningitis. As you live in the same rooms, please take precaution about the same.Sometimes cough and throat secretions may be contagious. However, even if the causing bacteria or virus is transmitted,it is uncommon that the person who got transmitted with it will develop meningitis.

Yes,you may contact the airport officer if it does not turn out the same.

Hope it helps. If you have some further questions,I shall be glad to have you in follow-up else please close the thread, rate it and write a review.
