Brief Answer:
indirect effect.

Detailed Answer:
As you likely know, cocaine does not stay active in the body for long. If the symptoms come on before the use of the cocaine, it cannot be due to the cocaine and it is not due to the previous cocaine. And yet.... being about to use cocaine seems to trigger it.

I cannot say in your particular case, and there are a variety of contexts in which this can occur. The expectation of cocaine can trigger muscle spasms and tension. The muscles lock up due to the expectation AND can also have that effect directly from the drug. This is not that uncommon.

Brief Answer:
or it might not be a drug.

Detailed Answer:
Ok, first, I am assuming there are not other bowel issues like constipation. Different question altogether. I am assuming you are under age 50--if over age 50, congratulations! I've never met someone your age who survived any cocaine use!(seriously, only know 3 users that age.. one organ donor after total stroke, one serious seizure and slight stroke, one multiple heart attacks and heart function 1/3 of normal). I know dozens who quit age 30-40.

Assuming that, Irritable bowel is very common affecting about 10% of everyone. It is a disorder of bowel motility (hence the name). Nothing is broken. It is not a risk for more serious disease. Classically, there are highs (runny) and lows (constipation/cramping) of the bowel motility. Bloating, gas, cramping are the key elements of it in most textbooks. There are specific criterion designated because nothing else causes them called the Rome Criterion:

There are several prescribed medications that are really safe and a little bit helpful. Classic diet advise of increase fluid, eat 3 regular meals and increase fiber and decrease fast food.... I haven't found all that helpful in anyone. Daily fiber supplements like metamucil I haven't tried in patients as much personally, but the company sells it for that. Often patients have found particular foods are triggers (spicy, particular starches found in root vegetables, or milk). Personally it is the sugar in grape juice that is not absorbed. The food associations are within the hour of eating it and fairly noticeable, so I doubt that is your trigger. But I also doubt other drugs are a trigger also and the usual irritable bowel disease is pretty likely (especially because I see it literally every day).

Brief Answer:
yes, fits with IBS

Detailed Answer:
yes, the stomach activity is actually mentioned as one of the key symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome (see previous link).
Don't think it is due to cocaine.

there is still the issue of stopping the cocaine and you might want to direct a question directly to me on this important point.
