Question: My 12 year old daughter had some labs done and her iron is very low. doctor wants us to see a hemotologist What are some of the reasons she could be so low? (her red blood cells are tiny, the doctor said)

Low iron can be due to less amount of iron in diet, increased iron loss from body or decreased absorption from intestine.

Low iron level at the age of 12 years can be due to loss of blood during menstruation in case your daughter has started menstruation.

Tiny red blood cells are due to iron deficiency.

Low iron needs to be corrected with iron supplements.

Thus, you may consult your hematologist for prescription of iron supplements.

She doesn't have her period yet. What else could be causing her lack of iron? I am purchasing iron sulphate today (as per doc instructions) and we have a hemotologist appt on XXXXXXX 29. I don't have a copy of her labs yet
