Posted on Sat, 10 Jan 2015
Question: Three days ago, 2 year old woke up with a tummy ache, seemed ok, ate etc. came home from daycare extremely tired, decreased appetite, glossy eyes, low grade fever. Gagged one time. Went to bed, slept through night. Yesterday, ate minimal bland foods (crackers/applesauce). Ran low grade fever. Slept most of the day. This morning woke up, asked for a drink, after 20 minutes vomited approximately one tablespoon liquid and what looked like yellow phlegm. Fell back asleep. Was awake approximately 3 hours, ate some pancakes and crackers, fell back asleep. I am very concerned with the sleepiness. This does not seem like a stomach virus and it's Sunday and his dr is closed. Any insight is welcome!

Brief Answer:
Sleepiness

Detailed Answer:
Hello. I just read through your question.
The symptoms you describe are common in stomach viruses. You express a concern that the sleepiness seems much even for a stomach virus.
Virtually all viral illnesses in pediatrics cause fatigue and sleepiness. It sounds like this one took more energy out of him than most.
I wouldn't be concerned that there is any other source for his sleepiness other than this virus. As the virus passes, his energy will return.
If in doubt, or if the sleepiness continues, I recommend consulting with your pediatrician when they reopen. For tonight, however, there is no need to be overly concerned.
