Suggest Treatment For Low Appetite And Runny Nose In An Infant?

default
Posted on Wed, 5 Aug 2015
Question: Dear Dr,

My baby is 8 months old and recently lost his appetite. He was eating well all along until 2 days ago. He had a slight runny nose 2 days ago but was well the next day. He refuses to eat after a few mouthful of feeding solid food. He had began to refuse formula too.

He is not running a fever and no vomitting or diarrhea. He is playing normal too. What could be the cause? What can we do? I just can't find out the cause

Brief Answer:
Most likely a self limiting viral illness

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Welcome to the HCM

I have gone through your question and understand your concerns. I see such cases routinely in my clinical practice. Most likely cause of these symptoms is a self limiting viral illness which caused running nose earlier and now affecting his gut. Don't worry. These infections subside with just symptomatic management and improve with in a few days.

At present, just offer your baby regular feeds and oral fluids. Don't worry if he takes only small amounts.
Also, it's advisable to start a probiotic such as enterogermina twice daily for next 5 days.
Hopefully this will help you.

I would be happy to help you out with any further questions.
Take care

Thanks for ur reply . My boy had recovered from his flu (I suppose so as there is no more running nose like few days ago) he is playing and active normal .. Still, his appetite had become so much smaller.. He is losing bit of weight and it pains me when I see that ..

Can the flu virus stil exist? There are no other symptoms.
What are some other common problems?
What are some other remedies I can try?

Brief Answer:
Start Syp. Bevon or Neutrolin B with enterogermina

Detailed Answer:
Don't worry. It's a common post flu illness. It will subside with in a few days.
To boost his appetite you may start a B complex syrup such as Bevon or Neutrolin B along with Enterogermina.
Keep offering regular feeds and fluids. If he is active then he will recover with the above with in few days.
Take care
