Question: My granddaughter failed every single class her first semester. I pay for her education. I suggested she come home and go to the community college and regroup while learning to manage her time and responsibilities. She said adamantly that she will not. She loves college! Now I've found out she has been seeing a counselor who advised her to take out loans and "stand her ground" with her XXXXXXX She told her I was too controlling. XXXXXXX was exactly like a child in your article which had to have a push to get her work done in high school. Was this appropriate for a counselor?

Brief Answer:
Young grand daughter and study problems

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for your query. I can understand your concerns.

Counselor is on paid service whether it is by the person or the college who pays. They will do whatever suits to the requirement of client. It may be appropriate for the client who pays.

You have not mentioned how old is your grand daughter.Anyway since she wants to continue in her present college and study further ,you should allow her to do so. Failure is only temporary .There are instances ,where with proper motivation and encouragement, the same student who failed ,did excellent in studies subsequently.
After all you can take a horse to the water but can't make him/her drink. Please continue to support her studies and go into the details why she failed. Discuss with her counselor and class teachers and let them believe that you really care for your grand daughter.

My granddaughter is 18 years, 5 months old. My confusion is the encouragement and direction to take out loans and disconnect with her family. Should a counselor get involved in the money advise and tell her to stay away from her family? But they still want me to pay for a car, phone, Ipad, and insurance. Seems like a spoiled brat that wants to stomp their foot and have their way.

Brief Answer:
Teen aged grand daughter and study issues

Detailed Answer:
It appears that you are paying well for your grand daughter's education. There is no lack of sincerity on your part and it shows how keen you are in giving proper education to your grand daughter. If a counselor is interfering and misleading your ward(it is easy to misdirect a teen-ager),it is highly wrong on the part of the said counselor.I think you have every right to censure the counselor and have your own way in this case.I support your stand as the case appears.A meeting with the counselor , your ward and a mediator along with you may solve the issue.
