Question: Hello Dr.

Please find below history: I just want to know on wednesday we went to Dr. and he suggested Omnix to my baby for loose motions may be for viral infection..
So today is 5th day we are giving this medicine to my baby .. Our Dr had also advised for stool culture test/examination but we could not do it because my babies are noe moved to my village and there we could not do it..

So for my baby we 1st completed the course for oflux 100 and after that today we are completing 5 days of course of Omnix..

Current medications: omnix
ORS
and Z&D
And giving ondem we he omitts..

Current age 8 months

Crrent frequency of loose motions is 5 times a day..
Sometimes a small quantity and no reddish color.

please suggest if we should continue with Omnix or not as 5 days are already completed..

Thanks,
XXXX

Brief Answer:
Complete course of Omnix, if begun. If not begun, do not start.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking again on HealthcareMagic.

If you yourself observe, the doctor has mentioned the possible cause to be viral, and yet has prescribed Omnix which contains Cefixime, an antibiotic. Already the course of Oflux or Ofloxacin, another antibiotic, has been completed. Antibiotics are not likely to be effective in case of viral infections. So irrespective of how many antibiotics you give one after the other, it will not help. I have already mentioned earlier that you need to continue giving ORS and you are already doing so. It was meaningless to give Omnix but since you have given it, please complete the course.

Please note that the frequency of passage of stool 5 times a day, is absolutely fine for a child of 8 months. It is not a cause of concern. If the lost salts and water are replaced, there should be no cause to worry about. The previous stool report had shown no blood in stool. So, I would simply insist you to stay relaxed.

Brief Answer:
If you are completing 5 days today, no need to continue further.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for writing back.

If you are completing 5 days today, no need to continue further. Moreover, even if stool culture shows growth of certain bacteria, it does not necessarily mean that there is an infection. Everyone's stool contains bacteria and it is a normal finding.

Please do not worry.
