Question: I awoke last night with terrible pain in my left side (back). It even hurts when I breathe and move about. I have had two back surgeries but this pain feels within the left quadrant.
Should I go to the ER. XXXXXXX

Hi and welcome.

Well, it looks like intercostal nerve pinched,or intercostal muscle pulling. If this is aggravated by movement then this is most likely of neuro muscular origin. In this case it should improve on non-steroid painkillers, warm compress, rest and some sedative medication such as benzodiazepine. However, if there is associated pain in chest, breathing difficulties, dizziness or sensation disorders in arms, you should see ER to do some tests.
