Posted on Sat, 27 Dec 2014
Question: I have had laryngitis for a 4 days. sometimes have below normal temp and sometimes normal and sometimes 99 ish temp. Staying in a lot and don't seem to be improving. Had a flu shot a week ago. Is this a cold or flu? Not blowing my nose much and have a rare sneeze. Not my normal cold. Feel it in my throat and glands but not severely. Am I contagious? I have a friend with cancer and don't want to get near her if I am. Thanks

Brief Answer:
Anti Allergic and Gargles.

Detailed Answer:
Welcome To HCM. I am Dr Anshul Varshney.
I understand your concern.
See, there is another possibility of flu like reaction following vaccination for flu. This is also a transient reaction like you are having.
Now, important thing to note is that you don't have fever. You must be just feeling feverish.
You don't need any antibiotics.
In such scenario I advise following:
1. To take an Anti Allergic like Levocetrizine.
2. To do warm , saline gargles atleast 3-4 times a day.
3. To take Paracetamol on as on when required basis. If you are having any body pains or fever.
This all should get better in 3-5 days.
I also advise you to avoid going close to people who are immunodeficiency like your cancer friend, as this if a viral infection, he/she can catch very easily.
I hope it helps.
If you have any further query please ask me.
Stay Healthy.
