Question: Hi...Im a 65 yr old woman who caught her toe going over a baby gate and landed on hard wood floor and husr my knee...really hurt when I landed...still hurts..not really bad unless I bend my knee back or turn lower leg like when put your foot up on your other knee to tie shoelaces. I dotn know if if should see a dr or not. My husband says thye would just tell me to ice it and rest it? My only concern about not going to the dr is that it may give me more problems in later years qnd I already have to deal with other pains....

Brief Answer:
Hi and welcome to HCM

Detailed Answer:
It is hard to say. In most people such traumas wont cause any significant knee damage. Rarely, menisceal or ligamentar injuries occur and fracture happens only if you fell from higher height or you have osteoporosis. I dont think that this urgnt medical care or xrays is neccessary at this point but if pain persist for more than 5 days or swelling of knee occur, you should see doctor. till this, apply cold compresses, rest and keep leg elevated. Wish you good health. Regards

I forgot to say it happened 8 days ago. Dont really want to seek medical help. It hurts a little all the time, but I only see stars (and not the kind when XXXXXXX and XXXXXXX look at each other, lol) if I bend my foot back at the knee or like to tie shoelaces, or if Im on my feet for a while. I do have arthritis, and i know i have spurs in back and other knee so I probably do in this knee also. Itsbeen hurting worse today even sitting because I went to a store yesterday and was walking around for about a half hour. I'm very happy to take your advice , just wanted you to have the whole picture.
How can you tell if its swollen if you are overweight (by about 40 pounds) I do notice both knees feel tight when I bend them...thinking that may be an indication they are swollen and both are warm to the touch in certain spots. Should I maybe take like 4 doses 800 mg of Ibuprofen times a day? I was told to do that once when I was having an episode with costchondritis. (Sorry for spelling) Thanks alot!!!
And now some advice from me...dont get old. Lol

hi

:)) I am sure that each life period has advantages and I a hope that thisknee problem will be the only medical issue that will bother you in next 30 years:)
Knee swelling is tested with so called "Balotman effect" and it can be done by another person or by yourself if you can reach affected knee by your hands while laying. First compare volume of both knees, try to press patella down by your hands,if you feel resistance or floating on fluids then it may be knee effusion and it should be aspirated. But I still thing that his was just contusion or tendon distension and 1-2 weeks of adequate rest should be enough. Don't take more than 3x600mg of ibuprofen per days since it may irritate stomach and have bad effect on liver function.
