Brief Answer:
Please consult urologist to clear ureter obstruction.

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXXX,
Thanks for writing in to us.

I have read through your query in detail.
Let me start my answer with a small description of the kidneys, ureter and urinary bladder.

The collecting system of the kidney is made of renal calyces and pelvis. This collects the urine formed in kidney and transports it through the ureter (tubes connecting kidneys and urinary bladder) to the urinary bladder. I guess that you have got ultrasound scan done and it shows hydroureteronephrosis, that is a term applied to increase in diameter of the ureter which carries urine from the kidneys to urinary bladder due to a stone from the kidney getting stuck in the mid or lower part of the ureter.

Since you have a 3 mm stone in the ureter, it is possible that the stone is now in the lower part of ureter. This is causing obstruction and please drink adequate water to allow the stone to come out of the lower ureter and into the urinary bladder. You might have pain at this time which will disappear once the stone reaches the urinary bladder. When this happens you might experience severe sharp pain for few days and require pain killers for sometime.

It is best to consult the urologist and take prescription of medications like alpha blocker which will cause contraction of smooth muscles in the ureter and cause the stone to travel down in to the urinary bladder. Doing kidney function blood tests and repeat ultrasound might also be required.

Neeri syrup and Pathrina tablets are recommended by Ayurvedic doctors for kidney stones and works best as long the stones are in the kidneys. However, if the stone is stuck in the ureter as in your case then these medications will not be of much help because urinary obstruction is there. Continuous obstruction in ureters for more than a month can cause kidney damage.

Hope this answers your question. Please feel free to correct any oversight in my interpretation of your problems and discuss them in detail as per your requirements.

Hope your query is answered.

Brief Answer:
Please find Dos and Donts below

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXXX,
Thanks for writing back with an update.

I have read through your ultrasound scan done on 31-10-2014.
The important points in your reports are the following
1. There are small stones in the upper pole of right kidney.
2. There is a possibility of smaller stones in both ureters causing swelling of both kidneys (hydroureteronephrosis) and this is more on the left side.
3. Mild fatty liver.

Coming to further investigations, it is written that a CT scan is required to know the exact number, size and location of all the stone. This is important to plan your treatment and even I would have suggested you to get a plain CT scan of KUB region to know in detail about the stones.

As you are interested in knowing the DOs and DONTs, please find it below

DOs
(i) Drinking as much as 1.5 to 2.5 liters) a day may help flush out your urinary system. This will also allow small stones to pass through.
(ii) Visit washrooms regularly and empty your bladder when you feel like doing urination.
(iii) Please take fruits like apple, papaya, watermelon, pineapple, mosambi, bananas and orange, vegetables like, white gourd, ladyfinger, pumpkin, pulses like toor dal, moong dal, bengal gram
(iv) You can take ALKASOL syrup 15-30 ml twice or thrice daily, dissolved in water for one week. This will prevent acidic urine and stone formation.
(v) If you have sharp pain then you can take tablet containing hyoscine (eg HYOCIMAX 10 mg or HYSCOPAN 10 mg) twice a day for 2 to 3 days, till you have pain. Though side effects are rare, please consult your doctor and take these medications under strict supervision.

DONTs
(i) Please avoid holding urine for long intervals.
(ii) Please reduce foods containing oxalates like non veg, vegetables like spinach, tomato, cauliflower, brinjals, nuts like kaju, pista and almonds.
(iii) Decrease extra salt in foods.
(iv) Avoid spicy pickles.
(v) Do not neglect any pain and consult your doctors immediately.
(vi) Please reduce alcohol and oily foods intake as you also have fatty liver.

Hope your query is answered.

Brief Answer:
Excess proteins intake can cause kidney stones

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXXX,
Thanks for writing back with an update.

As described by you, the supplement contains 26 gm protein per scoop. The normal protein intake of healthy men is 56 gms per day. High protein intake is related to increased chances of kidney stones formation. It is also known that getting more than 30 percent of your daily total calories from protein can increase your risk of developing kidney stones. I suggest that you re consider take excess proteins and also talk to a dietitian to get a diet plan which can help you. Eating lot of non veg proteins and whey protein can be the cause of your kidney stones.

You must try and follow a diet containing daily protein not more than 55 to 60 grams and this should not be more than 33 percent of your 2200 Kcal daily nutrition intake. If you are taking too much proteins in your regular food intake then you might have to stop taking whey proteins.
