Question: I am currently travelling with family and is in USA for an assignment. I with family went out for a walk (5/14/15) where we had bit of cold breeze (we walked for 20 min).

Initially i had a bit of cough and same night (early morning 5/15/15) my daughter had body fever of 102, so we gave her calpol (which she vomited) and then we gave her XXXXXXX warm sponge and then she slept, we checked her temperature (using ear thermometer) in morning it was 99.

Later on the day (5/15/15) we monitored her body temperature it was between 98-99 and he just have her homeopathy medicine

Today (5/16/15) she was having normal temperature (99) and in the evening we checked it was 101, so we gave her homeopathy medicine. My daughter does not has other issues, like she is playing as normal with activity.

Can you please help us with below questions
     1. Since today is 2nd day of fever, till when should I wait and then see doctor
     2. I have not given her fever medicines since fever has not gone above 102, is this correct?
     3. If its viral then how much time it would day to go off?
     4. If its bacterial, what are the symptoms which we need to look out for

Please advice

Brief Answer:
Likely to be a viral infection

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.

Most often such symptoms are usually caused due to certain viral infections which can last for 5-10 days irrespective of use of medicines. Cold increases the propensity of such and infection and you got it during the walk.

* You should take the child to a doctor and get her examined especially if the fever lasts for more than 7 days or if the child becomes lethargic. Otherwise stem inhalation at home should suffice. I doubt if homeopathic medicines are needed.

* the high temperatures need to be desperately brought under control. Give tepid sponging as well as tylenol to bring down the temperature in case of fever.

* It is most likely viral in origin and should last about 5-7 days.

* Wheezing, lethargy and fever lasting for more than 7 days, are signs you should be looking out for.

Hope that helps.

Brief Answer:
Give tepid sponging as well as tylenol

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for writing back.

* If the temperature is greater than 100°F, you should give tylenol. Below that sponging should suffice. Please make it a point to give tepid sponging or sponging with water at body temperature but not cold sponging. Cold causes blood vessels to constrict and would cause retention of heat.
* Taking her out should not be bothersome. But take care to protect her from the cold temperatures outside.
* If any one of the thermometers give a reading above 100°F, I would consider it worth giving tylenol.

Hope that it would help.

Brief Answer:
Give her cetirizine syrup and she should be fine

Detailed Answer:
Thanks again for writing back.

The itchiness is normal and giving some antiallergic like cetirizine syrup should be helpful. It does not necessiate taking her to a doctor. I have already mentioned the symptoms that warrant a doctors' visit.
