Suggest Treatment For Inflammation In Thumb

default
Posted on Sat, 4 Oct 2014
Question: I have a question regarding some inflammation in my thumb. About two weeks ago I was exercising using barbells, kettle bells and rowing which I believe resulted in some inflammation in my thumb. I then started having some wrist pain and redness in the area so I went to an urgent care clinic and ER where they gave me IV antibiotics and took x-rays. The redness went away within a day so I was told this is not an infection. Several days later, I followed up with a hand specialist who also reviewed the x-rays and suggested to me that this is not an infection but rather calcium deposits in the tendon which is causing the inflammation. I do not have pain in my thumb but have resumed exercise which involves a lot of gripping of barbells and I think this may be what has caused me to strain my wrist due to changing how I grip because of my thumb. My concern however is that although my thumb does not give me pain, it is still inflamed which restricts my range of motion I just want to understand whether it’s normal to take this long for this to heal. I would also welcome any recommendation to expedite the healing process on this.

Brief Answer:
It normally takes 3-4 week time

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Thanks for posting
I have gone through your query and understand your concern. It is most likely a sprain injury to thumb and wrist area and it usually takes 3-4 week time to heal. For speedy recovery you may avoid excessive physical work like gripping activities by hand especially by thumb.
Hot water fomentation, Ibuprofen along with trypsin/chymotrypsin to reduce pain and inflammation.
If possible you may send the x-ray picture along with the picture of hand to help you better.
Hope this helps.
Take care
