Suggest Treatment For Hypothyroidism

default
Posted on Mon, 22 Sep 2014
Question: I am 20 years old female and have been hypothyroid since last 4 years. have been taking thyronorm 50 mg all the time . since last two years this treatment has been backed by homeopathic treatment which according to the homeopathic doctor will prevent any increases in thyronorm dosages.Since last 4/5 months my tsh levels have increased again and the latest test shows T3:42, T4:8.5 and TSH as 8.90. as you can see the T3 levels are very low even though T4 looks normal. Do i need to increase the dosage of thyronorm now from 50 mg to lets say 75 mg and keep the homeopathic treatment as it is? I also observed that my body tempertaures remain low at 97.6 and my blood pressure also remains low . My menstruation cycles are irregular and sometimes very painful.

Brief Answer:
Natural progression of HYPOTHYROIDISM

Detailed Answer:
Dear
Good evening.
I guess I had answered your question today morning. Most if your symptoms can be explained by hypothyroidism itself. The likely cause of your hypothyroidism is auto immune (hashimotos).
There is surely a natural progression of this disease. But this is an easy to treat disease.
You have to increase the dose of Thyronorm from 50 mcg to 75 mcg.

Recheck the Free T4 and TSH after 6 weeks. Please check an Anti TPO also at that time.

Regarding homeopathic medications, I wouldn't agree to continue. But it is your choice.

If you still feel sick, it may be worthwhile checking an 8 AM serum cortisol.

am writing this again with respect to my original question which was closed. I have increased thyronorm to 75. however I notice one more symptom which am not sure if associated with this. I feel loss of concentration. I am studying engineering and I feel that I have to read a line about 20 times and find difficult to remember what I am reading. in class I find difficult to concentrate on what the teacher is saying and feel lazy in whatever I am doing. My grades have fallen due to this and exam results below average. I am very frustrated . staying in a hostel presently. is this in any way Brain fog as they call it? and is this treatable. will I have to quit my studies due to this ?

Brief Answer:
Hello

Detailed Answer:
Dear XXXXXX,
Good day. Apologies for the delay in reply.
Noted the reports.

Lack of concentration, tiredness and laziness can occur in uncontrolled hypothyroidism. However, these are non specific symptoms. Which means that these symptoms can occur in other diseases as well.
To be honest, dear, I feel you are very anxious. Please try to relax. Hypothyroidism is a gentle disorder and easy to treat.

I recommend you to do an Anti TPO, Vitamin B12, Vitamin D and CBC . These tests are done to rule out Vitamin B12 deficiency, Vitamin D deficiency as well as anemia,. In auto immune hypothyroidism, you may get associated other auto immune disorders like pernicious anemia and celiac disease. These may cause anemia and vitamin deficiencies.
As you have poor concentration etc, it is worth checking the above tests.

Since you have increased the dose to 75 mcg, then please recheck the Free T4 and TSH after 6 weeks. ( on the test day, please take Thyronorm after taking blood for test)

Regards
Binu
