Suggest Treatment For Hypersexuality In An Elderly Person

Question: I am writing in regards to my brother who is 67-years old. I'm guessing this is a mental health problem. We run a family owned service company and he travels frequently. I have had two semi-drivers in the last year call our office (he is driving a company vehicle w/signs) saying he is masterbating (Spelling??) while driving down the highway. About 17-years ago he was out of town and exposed himself to a lady in a Wal-Mart packing lot. He was caught, arrested, and went through some kind of therapy and they removed it from his record. I am at a total loss as to what to do and who to talk to about this. I am scared it will jeopardize our business, scared me may have a wreck and hurt someone; just don't know a starting point of what to do.

Brief Answer:
Try to talk to him directly if he repeats such behaviour again

Detailed Answer:
Hello thanks for choosing HCM for your health related queries

I can understand your concern. He is 67 years old and was found masturbating while driving company vehicle on highway. If we consider such behaviour considering his age then that should not be ignored. He also landed up in legal problems as he exposed himself in public place. All these symptoms denote some psychiatric problem and need proper evaluation. As he is related to your company so any such act can bring bad name to business so he should be shown to a psychiatrist. As he is your brother and you haven't directly seen him doing such acts in public place in such case talking to him directly about the problem would be a little difficult. In my opinion try to forget previous episodes but keep a watch on his behaviour. When ever he repeats such behaviour again then talk to him directly. Don't fight with him but explain him that his actions can bring bad name to business and this is not right to do such things while driving in public places. Talk to him in an empathetic tone. If that is not possible then try to talk to any good friend of him so that he/she can talk to him directly. In both situations he should accept the problem and should stop doing such things in future. Most of individuals with such symptoms stop repeating their behaviours once caught because of fear of social stigma.

Hypersexuality is a common symptom in a lot of individuals but such behaviours in public places warrant evaluation. Individuals with Mania, Perversion disorders may show such symptoms. If he continues to repeat such bad behaviours then talk to him and request to consult a psychiatrist.

Thanks, I hope this helps you. Please don't hesitate to ask again for more doubts.

Take care

He and his wife are Sunday school teachers for 4th graders and also have multiple grandchildren. Would you fear that he is a threat to children?

Brief Answer:
I dont think he is threat to children considering his symptoms

Detailed Answer:
Hello again and thanks for a follow up

So far he has shown two types of behaviours. One was about 17 years back and I guess he never repeated such behaviour again in public. Second is his habit of masturbation in public especially while driving. A lot of males masturbate for pleasure but usually they do such acts in private, he is showing symptoms of exhibitionism which is a type of sexual perversion. This means that he is getting aroused or satisfied by exposing himself in public place, but this doesn't mean that he is a threat to children. His symptoms need evaluation but at this state in my opinion he is not a threat to children.

Try to remember or find out if he has shown any behaviour that shows his sexual advancement to children. If he hasn't shown any such behaviour then I dont think he is a threat. Still keep a watch on his behaviour.

I hope this helps you. Please ask again for more doubts and clarifications.
