Posted on Thu, 9 Oct 2014
Question: I helped my daughter move. Had some pain in hip flexor, some smaller pain in crease between hip flexor and abdomen. Sometimes feel a fluttering in that area. No protrusions. Is this a type of hernia? Does it require surgery? What kind of testing should I get? What kind of doctor should I visit for eval?

Brief Answer:
This is not hernia

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
I studied your case and I do not think that you have a hernia. Hernias are not painful and tend to bulge with coughing. Hernias are diagnosed by ultrasound. General Surgeons are best doctors for it. But before I advise you to do anything, I want to know few details about your illness.
1. Since when you are having these symptoms?
2. Is there any impulse or vibration in groin when you cough?
3. Do you able to sit on floor or use stairs?
Please send me answers of these questions. I will try my best to help you.
Thanks.

Answers:
1. The moving event was 8/15/14. The hip flexor pain began the next day, which disappeared in a few days. There is a slight uncomfortable feeling in the side of the abdomen wall near the interface with that hip flexor area on the days when the fluttering occurs, which only happened a few times since the move. First on 8/30/14 a few times that day. Second a week ago, and third, today a few times.
2. No impulses or vibrations in groin when coughing. No noticeable discomfort during bowel movements.
3. I can sit on the floor, though I do not do that much and it is not very comfortable. Sitting on the floor is easier for me with legs extended, knees unbent. If I try to cross my legs with bent knees my body says my hips are not flexible enough for that position. I use stairs daily several times without any difficulty.

Brief Answer:
It is not hernia

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
I have studied your case and I can assure you that it is not hernia. So you should be relax about it. I think it is a hip muscles sprain which is causing pain and discomfort.
I would suggest you following .
1. Avoid standing for long times or staircase.
2. Hot water fomentation.
3.Tablet Etoricoxib after discussing with your doctor.
I hope this pain and discomfort will go in a week. If you feel increase in pain or swelling then you can get a ultrasound examination of groin.
I hope this answer will be useful for you. Let me know if there is any other follow up questions.
Thanks.
