Question: Hi

My name is xxxxxxx and I have high cholesterol.I take statin drugs 40 mg.My weight is around 62 kgs and height 183 cm.I am taking statins for around 3 years now.My weight has not increased a lot hence I recently started with gym to gain some weight/muscle and they also advised me to take protein bars and shakes to increase my protein intake.I read in few places that taking statins will mean I cant gain much muscle or weight. Is that true that since I take statins my gym work will be unfruitful. Also Protein powder and bars low in sugar and zero cholesterol can they cause any harm?

Brief Answer:
Hello XXXXXXX yes statin do affect protein supplement absorption

Detailed Answer:
I understand your concern for your weight but here we have to choose between risk benefit ratio one hand there is high cholesterol levels which predisposes an individual to the risk of atherosclerosis ultimately leading to blockage in various arteries. If we stop the statin just to get the advantage from protein supplement then it won't be wise.
Also most of the protein supplements that are available in the market are not in the pure form and the long term use causes kidney damage.
I hope this information will help you in making a decision. If you have any more doubts you can ask me back or else you can close the discussion and kindly rate the answer.
