Suggest Treatment For High Blood Sugar

default
Posted on Thu, 20 Aug 2015
Question: Good morning. Perhaps a bit of a ridiculous question, but nonetheless it is peaking my curiosity. I am a type one diabetic. This morning I woke up with a high blood sugar - about 250. To speak for why it was high, I believe I am getting sick. Regardless of the reasoning, my ketones were at trace. I know that ketones breakdown muscle and fat. Would having trace ketones or a blood sugar that high (I am assuming for several hours considering I was sleeping) have a detrimental effect on muscle growth? I have been trying to gain some muscle weight due to my consideration of joining the football team. Will this set me back at all? Again, I know this question is kinda silly but I spend a lot of time researching and learning about fitness so my interest is present. Also, my blood sugar is on the decline and I set up a temp basal for a little kick, per usual when I start feeling sick. Please share your thoughts

Brief Answer:
Chronic hyperglycemia can affect growth

Detailed Answer:
Hello there,
Thanks for writing to HCM. Read your query and noted the contents.

Your question is valid. I am sure that you are well aware of diabetes and its complications. Its good to see that you are reading your condition well (high sugars with ketones either due to insufficient basal insulin or an underlying infection).

I would like to tell you that an acute rise in glucose would not affect your muscle growth. However chronic hyperglycemia can affect muscle regeneration and bone formation via suppression of growth hormone levels.

Its good you have reset your basal levels. Just recheck your sugars a little later and your ketone levels as well. I am sure if its alright and you can maintain your sugars well you will be fit as anybody to kick some ball.

I will be happy to answer any more queries if you have any. Wishing you good health.
Warm regards,
Dr Praveen
