Question: i am 55 years old , 10 to 15 lbs overweight , I am a commercial pilot and had a resting EKG in November, at that time my flight surgeon told me my blood pressure was getting high and to lose some weight. I went to another Dr. Yesterday and my blood pressure has spiked to 170/ 87? I have been monitoring and it's staying around 155/87.
The increase seems dramatic, should I go see a cardiologist immediately? XXXX

Brief Answer:
GHigh blood pressure; no urgent visit

Detailed Answer:
Hi and welcome to HCM. Thank you for your question. I understand your concern.

I, also, share the opinion that there si not something major to be worried about. This appears to be the first stage of high blood pressure, or hypertension, which is find in 85 per cent of people above 50 years of age. The fact that if you would have been my patient I would have started you on a anti-hypertensive drug is perceistly because you are a pilot of a jet. At this point, I would propose a beta-blocker, a class of drugs which helps on lowering the high blood pressure and decreasing the heart workload by reducing the heart rate. Also, within the beta-blockers, I would choose propranolol, which also has anxiety-lowering properties, based on your job. I encourage you to discuss about this treatment with your cardiologist in your next treatment, but nothing urgent though.

I hope you find my answer helpful. I am happy to help, if you have follow-up questions,

My best regards,
Dr. Meriton
