Suggest Treatment For High Blood Pressure

Question: I am a 55 year old female, generally healthy, but recently diagnosed with high blood pressure. I am also an archaeologist, and work in Greece. During our current heat wave, I am feeling weak, slightly dizzy, and generally lethargic. After 30 years of work in Greece I know I normally can tolerate the heat. I am now taking Atacand Plus, 16+12.5mg, candesartan cilexetil-hydrochlorothiazide. My blood pressure has been consistently in the normal range (less than 120/70) for weeks since I switched to Atacand from an ACE inhibitor, which made me cough. Would reducing the dosage or frequency of Atacand give me back the energy I need?

I would explain as follows:

Detailed Answer:
Hello!

Welcome and thank you for asking on HCM!

Regarding your concern, I would explain that your symptoms could be related to Atacand plus adverse effects.

But, this is the lowest daily dose of this drug and we can not reduce it.

From the other hand, it is important exclude other possible causes that may lead to this symptomatology:

- chronic anemia
- thyroid dysfunction
- adrenal gland dysfunction
- electrolytes imbalance.

So it is important performing some tests before considering changing your actual therapy:

- a complete blood count
- blood electrolytes
- thyroid hormone levels.

Hope you will find this answer helpful!

Kind regards,

Dr. Iliri
