Suggest Treatment For High Bilirubin Level

Posted on Mon, 24 Nov 2014
Question: Hi,

Since last 4 to 5 months my husband is having a higher bilirubin. The total bilirubin found in last 4 to 5 months are 1.4, 1.5, 1.03, 1.8.. (mg/dL)

He had all the tests regarding Gallbladar, Hepatitis, etc.. but everything shows Normal in the report except the Total Bilirubin.

The doctor said there's nothing to worry about. It's all normal and doesn't require any Treatment.

Last month test report showed a Total Bilirubin of 1.03 mg/dL. But again when we did a test last Sunday the Total Bilirubin has gone up to 1.81 mg/dL, and the Direct Bilirubin = 0.32 mg/dL and Indirect Bilirubin=1.49 mg/dL

The Lab Standard is as follows...
Total Bilirubin range 1.0 - 1.2 mg/dL
Direct Bilirubin range 0 - 0.25 mg/dL
Indirect Bilirubin range 0 - 1.0 mg/dL

Please guide us what might be the reason. Is there any treatment suggested here. Please advise.

And yes, I point I must share here...
12 years ago my husband had a severe jaundice and he recovered from the disease under proper medical treatment.

Brief Answer:
Tablet ursodeoxycholic acid 300 mg can be given.

Detailed Answer:
Hello XXXX

Latest report shows mildly increased SGPT and it indicates liver injury.Total bilirubin is also raised in latest report.
Increased SGPT and bilirubin may be due to many causes like hepatitis, dyslipidemia, medicines, autoimmune cause, alcohol etc.

As hepatitis is excluded, other causes like altered lipid profile should be assessed.

In such conditions,I suggest tablet ursodeoxycholic acid 300 mg twice daily for three months to my patients. It helps in regeneration of liver cells.

Avoid alcohol completely if your husband take it.
He should avoid fried and junk food.

Get well soon.
Hope I have answered your question.
Further queries are most welcome.

Dear Sir,

Thank you for your quick response.

First of all my husband don't take alcohol and he don't have any other bad habits such as smoking, tobacco, drinking, etc. He is under diet since last couple of months.

Do you suggest any Tests to check Dyslipidemia or autoimmune?

Is it necessary to take the above medicine which you suggested? Is there anything serious and need to worry about?

Thanks XXXX
