Posted on Mon, 3 Nov 2014
Question: Once my bp went to 170/110 and doctor had prescribed me locar-25. But i went to heart specialist and he conducted ECG and renal doppler and told me not to take me any medicine. i have been taking anxit for my anxiety but i feel very tired and not able o concentrate. I am always in stress that my BP is rising. today in afternoon and evening i recorded my BP as 140/91 and 138/91. If i start taking locar will it lower my pressure below normal or will it have no side effect on normal bp.

Brief Answer:
wait, remain calm, consult psychologist

Detailed Answer:
Dear Sir
Blood pressure is a continuous variable i.e. it goes on changing minute to minute. It increases with any physical or mental activity or stress. Even going out in cold or trying to solve a mathematical problem increases your BP.
If your BP measured under non-stressful ideal condition is repeatedly above the cut-off limit of 140/90 mmHg or there is evidence of high blood pressure on other organs, only then you need to take medicines. Single high readings or high readings only during stress do not carry much significance.
Try to remain calm as anxiety itself will lead to higher pressure and further anxiety. Since your cardiologist has chosen not to start medicines as yet, you must wait and try to remain calm.
Inability to concentrate and lethargy can be due to anti-anxiety drugs. I would recommend you to discuss this issue with your physician and try to get treatment from a psychologist who is expert in non-medicinal treatment of anxiety.
Do monitor your BP once in 2-3 days. It should be measure nearly at same time of day. You must not have exercised/ smoked/taken tea/ coffee in last one hour. You must be mentally/ physically relaxed.
If you smoke, please stop smoking. Try to maintain ideal body weight (body mass index of 23). Do daily supervised exercise. Do meditation/ yoga/relaxation exercises.
Feel free to discuss further.
Sincerely
Sukhvinder

JUST NOW I MEASURED MY BP AND IT CAME OUT TO BE 150/100. THE ANXIETY INCREASES IT. IF I TAKE MEDICATION FOR BP AT LEAST I CAN STOP ANXIT. BUT WILL IT LOWER MY NORMAL BP. I AM VERY STRESSED I ALSO HAVE JAUNDICE AND THATS WHY I CANT EXERCIISE ALSO. CAN I TAKE LOCAR FOR SOME DAYS UNTIL THAT MY ANXIETY WILL GO.

ALSO HOW MUCH TIME DOES LOCAR TAKE TO NORMALISE HIGH BP AS I CAN CARRY IT IN MY POCKET ALSO.
ALSO I FEEL TINGLING IN MY LEFT LEG AND SLIGHT COLD ARM.

Brief Answer:
Do not try to overmedicate yourself

Detailed Answer:
Dear Sir
Losar is not a treatment for anxiety. If you have jaundice you must not take any medicine, on your own, without advise of your physician.
I do not see any reason for being so anxious at these BP levels. Perhaps you are too afraid of any blood pressure just above the normal limit. You must understand that your anxiety is much more harmful to you than the BP at these levels. In your anxiety, you are trying to device methods which will ultimately be harmful to your body. It is not so that any marginal rise above the threshold will be fatal and it is not so that you have to keep these levels under 140/90 at every given movement.
Losar like medicines take 2-3 weeks to bring maximum effect. So they will not have any significant acute effect at this dose. Yes, they effect BP as a whole and will lower the normal BP to some extent but only after its full effect.
I would recommend you to consult a good physician for management of jaundice first. You must also consult a psychotherapist for treatment of anxiety. You should take medication for high BP only when your cardiologist advises so.
Sincerely
Sukhvinder

Brief Answer:
wait to start exercise

Detailed Answer:
Dear sir
If you are recovering from acute episode of jaundice, you must avoid exercise for now and at least for 6 weeks. You should start exercise only after normalization of all parameters and a formal clearance from your physician.
Any drug which has a potential to induce sleep is usually avoided in jaundice. Since it seems to be a recovery phase of your jaundice you must discuss with your physician before stopping it. Do not worry, sudden withdrawal of anxit like drugs may produce some symptoms but it can be managed by gradual withdrawal.
Calm down, relax and listen to your physician who is managing jaundice. That is our first priority and just monitor your BP. Discuss with cardiologist if there are alarmingly high BP or bothersome symptoms.
Sincerely
Sukhvinder
