Question: I am 58 yrs old, had a partial hysterectomy @ 6 yrs ago, kept my L ovary and cervix. Last 5 yrs going thru menopause .. 7/29/14 have physical w/ blood work done all is good BP 118/80. Inquire @ Estradiol for muscle pain & hot flashes, begin 1mg Estradiol and feel great!..loads of energy, sex drive returns, no muscle pain. Day 15 feel off, headache, short term memory loss, feel awful, pain deep in L leg and knee .. stop taking Estradiol to get it out of my system.. a few days later BP is 152/96 dr wants me to take zoloft or Paxil because "it is the bomb", I'm not depressed..I take 1 Xanax doesn't help..a few days later feel terrible drive to urgent care BP 188/116, run tests all is ok, BP settles to 120/80..travel to high sierras L leg throbbing, terrible pain..family tells me to check out DVT..Urgent care again BP 152/96 they run D Dimer; is negative. I've never had high BP until I started the Estradiol and now I continue to have BP spikes. It is troublesome wakes me at night, pulse is racing. Will this Estradiol eventually leave my system? or did I create some damage of some sort? I've been off of it for 2 months now..I just want to feel well again as before the HRT. Not sure which specialty MD to see..should I go on a BP med until this settles down? Uugh, I know a lot of stuff here, but I am healthy, 127 lbs and never smoked. I truly believe there may have been a clot even w/ the neg D DImer..can they dissolve?

Brief Answer:
You should consult a cardiologist.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Facts about your problem-

1) Blood pressure in your case may be age related and postmenopausal. Perhaps estrodiol initiated it, but I will not blame the drug as the primary cause.
2) Estradiol effect remain in your body at least 6 months.
3) No, there is no specific medication available which remove the effect of estradiol from your body.
4) Life style changes and food habit will decrease the effect of hormone. You can try flax seeds, antioxidant, garlic, decrease body weight, high protein and low fat diet.
5) If your D-Dimer test results are negative then chances of clot are very less.

In my opinion you should consult a cardiologist or physician to control your blood pressure with anti hypertensive drugs. Antihypertensive agents can be moderated subsequently based on your needs.

Hope I have answered your query if you have further questions I will be happy to help you.

Good luck and Regards
Dr. Richa
