Suggest Treatment For High BP And Increased Heart Rate

default
Posted on Wed, 8 Apr 2015
Question: Hello Doctor,

I am 48 years old non - vegetarian and am hypothyroid- I am on regular medication from May 2014 onwards. I take medicines for thyroxine , for high BP on daily basis and 1 tablet Rosuvas F10 every alternate day. All these medicine dosages are as per doctor prescription.
I also was taking Revital Men capsules as health supplement , over past 5 years , on my own , for improved energy levels and vitality.
From past 2 days I was not taking Revital capsules as it is not available in market . I had some difficulties sleeping day before yesterday and occasional fast heartbeats in over past 2 nights around 8 to 9 pm.
My questions are-
Is my increased heart rate , frequent arguments with my family members in night and difficulty in sleeping due to not taking Revital over past 2 days.
Also, can I take Revital XXXXXXX capsule instead of Revital Men's , as the former is available in market?
Does Revital have any side effects in hypothyroid patients who are on medication.

Brief Answer:
You can take Revital XXXXXXX capsule in place of Revital Men

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for your query. I can understand your concerns.

Revital is multivitamin multimineral capsule health supplement which also contains Ginseng extract powder. Benefits of Ginseng are uncertain but it has some aphrodisiac, stimulant properties.

Iodine excess can itself cause hypothyroidism. The recommended average daily intake of iodine is 150–250 micro gram/d for adults. Revital contains only Iodine 0.1 mg i.e. 100 microgram /capsule.

If you are having any withdrawal effects it is due to stimulant effects of ginseng.
You can take Revital XXXXXXX capsule in place of Revital Men, if the contents include ginseng.

Dear Doctor,

The REVITAL SENIORS capsule has an amount of 14 mg of Ginseng as against 42.5 mg in REVITAL MENS capsule. The other main differences between the contents of the 2 types of capsules are as indicated -

Ginseng     42.5 mg      14 mg
Iodine      0.1 mg      0.15 mg
Isoflavones      nil      50 mg
Biotin      nil      30 mcg
Energy      4.23 kcal      2 kcal
Carbohydrate     0.10 g      0.40 g
Protein      0.02 g      0.05 g
Fat      0.30 g      0.01g
Calcium      75 mg      200 mg
Manganese      0.5mg      2.5 mg
Potassium      2 mg      40 mg
Phosphorus      50 mg      100 mg
Ferrous Fumerate     17 mg      Nil
Copper      0.5 mg      2 mg
Zinc      10 mg      15 mg
Magnesium      3 mg      100 mg

Molybdenum nil      25 mcg
Selenium      nil      25 mcg
Nickel      nil      5 mcg
Silicon      nil      10 mcg
Vanadium      nil      10 mcg
Boron      nil      150 mcg
Chromium      nil      100 mcg

Also, the various vitamin contents differ minimally in the above 2 types of REVITAL health supplement.

My further queries are-
1. Keeping in mind my hypothyroid condition and present medicines taken for the same , non veg diet and obesity ( I weigh around 75-76kgs as compared to the ideal weight of around 68-70 kgs for my height and age) , and the above mentioned differences in contents of 2 types of REVITAL - should I take REVITAL SENIORS capsule on daily basis?
2. What should be the dosage for my intake - 1 or 2 capsules?
3. Is the REVITAL capsule to be taken after breakfast , lunch or dinner?

Dear Doctor,

I went around to around 20 main chemist/ pharmacy shops in New XXXXXXX , but found out that none of them is presently stocking Revital Men's capsules, although the Revital Seniors and Revital Women capsules are available. The future availability of Revital Men's capsules is also unknown and uncertain as the original manufacturer Ranbaxys has been acquired by Sun PHARMA company.

My query is -

Can I take Spirulina ( by Sunova) tablets in the interim till Revital Men's capsules is available? Spirulina has following ingredients-
Energy- 1.74 Kcal
Protein- 0.28g
Carbohydrate- 0.16g( without any sugar content)
Fats- 0 g
Spirulina Platensis- 500mg

Additionally , this contains iron, vitamins, minerals , micronutrients and GLA. The exact amount of these ingredients in the tablets, is not indicated on the bottle .

Please advise whether I can take Spirulina regularly , keeping in mind my present hypothyroid condition, under treatment through medication, my age and my body weight conditions .

Brief Answer:
REVITAL capsule and alternatives

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Since you tolerated Revital men well and your thyroid state remained stable , I would advise you to take Revital XXXXXXX till the production & supply of Revital men is restored by the company,as it seems it is their their flagship product.
Also there is no substantial difference in contents between 'men' and 'seniors' brand.
The benefits claimed by Spirulina are uncertain and it has side effects also.
Revital specifies their content whereas Spirulina does not. You don't know what exactly you are taking.
