Suggest Treatment For Hemorrhoids

default
Posted on Tue, 13 Oct 2015
Question: I have hemorrhoids. I recently had over a week of bleeding with bowel movements. Besides fiber, water, fruit, yada. yada, a mainstay of my self treatment has been lubricating the rectum before and after with petroleum jelly.
Success! The bleed subsided by the time I got my appointment with the colorectal specialist. He confirmed I have hemorroids.
Ok, sooo...
The colorectal specialist recommends AGAINST use of lubricants inserted into the rectum. He would not enunciate why.
He recommends daily Miralax for stool softening.
He advises ligation, but no hurry on that.
I personally think that the lubrication he advises against is very good long term management method.
I am also doubtful that regular use of saline cathartic is a good long term method.
What do you think?

Brief Answer:
Dietary adjustment is necessary.

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Welcome to HCM

Application of petroleum jelly is temporary measure, that might be the reason the specialist has advised you against it. With the use of petroleum jelly, three is chance of infection, as it will not be sterile.

Dietary adjustment(increased dietary fiber by eating more green leafy veggies) and stool softening is required in case of haemorrhoids. I would recommend sitz bath twice or thrice a day.

Regarding the surgery, it is based on the examination, and skip the severity of symptom, as sometimes with medical management they reduce. So that might be the reason, they had advised it is not need to be done immediately.

Hope this helps.
