Suggest Treatment For Hematoma In Leg

Question: I was in a fatal car accident in september 2010, I was lucky to survive. I have many on going problems as you can imagine but one that gets overlooked, I feel, is my hematoma. Its located on my left leg high thigh right below my hip. It sticks out and a little bigger than a softball, maybe bigger. The brusing finally went away about 6months after it developed. If I push on it, it hurts, if somebody touches it or I bump it even lightly it hurts. But recently its been throbbing. Ive tried ice and hot packs and pain meds along with benadryl..im looking for more answers. Ive read most peoples go away with a few weeks ive had mine for 4 years! Ive experienced blood clots before and im worried. Also ive had to move away from my original doctors I had for all my accident stuff, so I feel my new ones do not understand what my body has been through and why I have this worry that my hematoma could be worse than I think. Is it normal? Can I ask for it to be removed? My doctor just ignores it. what specialist would I seek?

Brief Answer:
Has it been stable in size over the years?

Detailed Answer:
Hi and thank you so much for this query.

I am so sorry to hear about this accident and the injuries you survived. I am however grateful that you survived the fatal accident.

If this hematoma has not increased in size since the accident, then there is little reason to get too worried about it that it could be more concerning. If it has increased in size, we have reasons to get worried.

My suggestion is that you get this hematoma evaluated. Because it causes pain, it is a reason for the doctors to look into and make sure that there is nothing to worry about. An ultrasound would confirm the diagnosis. Because of the size, the pain symptoms and failure to resolve over the years, I will not decline draining it out to relief pressure and symptoms. This would be a good idea.

For sure you can ask for it to be removed. Talk about it to your doctor and let him know it hurts. That is enough reason for evaluation and drainage. Unless it is not just a hematoma but something else, drainage would be a very straight forward procedure.

I hope this addresses your query fully. Feel free to demand for more information and clarifications if need be. I wish you well.
