Suggest Treatment For Heart Failure And Anxiety

default
Posted on Mon, 20 Apr 2015
Question: I recently went in for a doctors appointment where they checked my blood pressure and heart rate. My blood pressure was 90/60 and my heart rate was 52 which alarmed the doctor. She is sending me to a cardiologist for further tests. I am 26 and run regularly but wouldn't say I'm super fit or anything. I have always suffered from strong anxiety. Should this low heart rate concern me much? I am worried I could have a heart failure or a cardiac arrest or something? Thanks.

Brief Answer:
not alarming

Detailed Answer:
Hello and thank you for your question.
I do not think you should be alarmed. These findings can be normal in a young person. It is more common to have these findings in a well trained athlete but you may just be very healthy and have a normally low blood pressure and pulse. These findings are not signs of heart failure or heart attack. I agree that seeing a cardiologist is a good idea just to make sure that this is normal for you but I do not think it is anything for you to worry about. Just take care of yourself and see the cardiologist to make sure that all is well.

Whoa, thank you so much! I really appreciate your speedy response. I feel I am short of breath a lot. Sorry I forgot to mention that before. That wouldn't indicate a weak heart either would it? Sorry for the stupid questions haha. Like I said I'm an anxious person!

Brief Answer:
not necessarily

Detailed Answer:
Hi and thanks for your follow up.
The shortness of breath can be caused by many things, even anxiety. If everything checks out fine with the cardiologist which I suspect it will, then you might have your doctor do some pulmonary function tests (just blowing in a machine) to make sure that you do not have asthma. The shortness of breath is unlikely related to the low blood pressure and low pulse, but again just get it checked out first with the cardiologist to make sure. Make sure you are drinking enough water and that you are exercising at least 30 minutes each day. Adding a multivitamin might help also.
