Question: I am 79 yrs old in relatively good health except for the rather recent Virgo attacks. I have been totally deaf on my leaf since 1998. Just over nite. House Ear in L A could not help. Said the nerve died. Have been hearing fine with the right until early 2015. In early 2015 I had meningitis was receiving antibiotics for it. Appx July I started having a slight hearing loss & was given steroids. Worked good for awhile then lose started again. Dr claimed the antibiotics caused nerve damaged. No treatment was available. I hear noise but not clarity to understand what is being said. Words are just noise. The 1500 dollar hearing aid only makes the noise louder but gives no clarity of the words being said. When I speak it soqunds to me like I am pinching my nose tight. Is there any hope for this situation?. Loud noise is rather painful as well. Betty Fortezzo

Brief Answer:
Sensorineural hearing loss is difficult to manage

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.

I have gone very carefully through the details. Unfortunately there is very little that can be done in your case. The things that can be done are:
* Talk to your doctor about hearing aids with masking sounds. Such hearing aids generate an additional sound which masks the noise that you are already hearing and hence might provide some relief.
* You can take antioxidants like tablets containing ginkgo biloba extracts. It is however doubtful regarding how much you would benefit from it.
