Question: Father-in-law hospitalized with hallucinations on Weds. After testing, discovered sodium level deficient and diagnosed him with water poisoning (has history of prostrate problems, uses catheter; doctor had prescribed a certain amount of water to drink daily). Hospital called this morning; sent him home due to agitated state. He is home now but continues to have hallucinations (seeing things that aren't there), and can not sit still for more than a few minutes at a time. Is this a side effect of the low sodium and how long should it last?

Brief Answer:
Until correction of electrolytes and acidbase blnc

Detailed Answer:
Thank you for asking
Water intake beyond judicious levels may cause that but neurological symptoms kick in with severe low levels less than 1 15 . symptoms will resolve with correction of electrolytes and acid base balance. Strictly monitor electrolytes, reduce water intake, and you may use unpalatable oral urea to help sodium levels.
Resolution of symptoms may take a while after correction of electrolytes so hang in there for a while.
I hope it helps. Take good care of your father in law and don't forget to close the discussion please.
May the odds be ever in your favour.
