Question: Hello Doc,

For the past 1 year I have been experiencing hair thinning and hair loss and it looks like i am developing a bald patch.
I read that the above problem in men is mostly because of genetic or hormonal reasons.
So what tests due you recommend to find out if my problem is hormonal related?

Also I use my headphones a lot while at work and at home , which have a band that sits on top of the head . Can this cause any stress to the scalp and hence the above problem
I had been on Pan 20 and pan 40 tablets for a couple of months on and off . Do these cause hormonal imbalance which leads to hair loss and hair thinning.

I fear that I may go bald. can you please suggest me some test or medications.
If diagnosis by a specialist is required can you suggest a good clinic @ XXXXXXX for my problem.

Please feel free to ask any other details required.

Thanks
doctor

Brief Answer:
male pattern baldness is usual.

Detailed Answer:
dear Mr. XXXXXXX hi, welcome to hcm. I am dr. XXXXXXX
hair thinning and male pattern baldness is actually familial, and is usual. so if your father or grandfather has similar pattern of baldness , you are facing one.
if not, then kindly check your TSH and FT4, as thyroid dysfunction is the second most common cause of hormonal imbalance causing hair loss.
also please check your iron profile, calcium, vitamin D, and b12 levels. Although these deficiencies affect females more commonly but we must rule out as males are no exception.
also you have asked for a reference in XXXXXXX you can see dr XXXXXXX sethi at care hospital, one of the most renowned endocrinologist of XXXXXXX
regards!

Hello Doc,

Thanks for the quick reply. Hope you are doing great.

Regarding baldness in our family :
1. My mom's dad was bald and also 2 out of 5 of my maternal uncles (mom's brothers) are bald
2. My Cousin (dad's brother's son) is also bald

You have mentioned me to " kindly check my TSH and FT4" . What is the name of the test that checks TSH and FT4?
Also what are the tests required to check my iron profile, calcium, vitamin D, and b12 levels?

If the hair thinning is due to hormonal imbalance or nutritional deficiencies then can It be revered and lost hair regained ?

Also what is your opinion on the plastic band of a headphone sitting on top of head for say 10 hours or more
OR wearing a cap for all day long , Do these cause hairfall or bald patch formation?
I have heard many people also refuse to wear helmet because they think it causes hairfall/baldness?

Please also advice on pan or any other meds causing the above issue.

can you please also mention what other symptoms are present in hormonal imbalance like gynacomastia (I guess I have it but I am not sure , have not checked with a doc. My HEIGHT : 173cm My weight is 75 kg , waist is 37 inch )

thanks

Brief Answer:
let us take up one by one.

Detailed Answer:
Hi, sorry for the delay as i was out for a meeting.
now,
Q.1. "You have mentioned me to " kindly check my TSH and FT4" . What is the name of the test that checks TSH and FT4?
Also what are the tests required to check my iron profile, calcium, vitamin D, and b12 levels?"
A. 1. kindly visit any lab , show them these tests as written , they will do it.

q2. If the hair thinning is due to hormonal imbalance or nutritional deficiencies then can It be revered and lost hair regained ?
A.2 definitely yes. but if genetic then not.

q3. Also what is your opinion on the plastic band of a headphone sitting on top of head for say 10 hours or more
OR wearing a cap for all day long , Do these cause hairfall or bald patch formation?
I have heard many people also refuse to wear helmet because they think it causes hairfall/baldness?
A 3. sorry i missed this part in the previous query of yours. yes , persistent use of a band , cap, or helmet, even hair partition in a particular manner for years together, make your hair growth scanty in those areas.

q4. Please also advice on pan or any other meds causing the above issue.
A4. there are drugs causig hair loss like chemotherapy used for cancer or hormonal replacement at times, even steroids and some antibiotics.

q5. can you please also mention what other symptoms are present in hormonal imbalance like gynacomastia (I guess I have it but I am not sure , have not checked with a doc. My HEIGHT : 173cm My weight is 75 kg , waist is 37 inch )
A.5. hormonal imbalance can cause gynecomastia , loss of libido. but same hormonal imbalance cannot cause baldness and gynecomastia at the same time. baldness is a male feature and gynecomastia is female feature. i hope you understand that hormonal driven imbalance will move in one direction only.
regards!
