Question: I am male but my breasts have grown and look like a 12 year old girls breast. it is embaressing to remove my shirt in public. sometimes I feel itchy on the nipple. I am 82 years old but keeping good health, I believe I am sensitive to sunlight. Even though I do not expose to direct sun light, I get dark on my face and hands and all the rest of the body has very light complexion. These two colors are very distinctive and that also cause me embarrassing in public. Please advise what the reason is and remedies. XXXXXXX

Brief Answer:
It is normal but the only treatment is surgery.

Detailed Answer:
Hi, XXXX. Thanks for the detailed description, it helps us understand. It is quite normal to have enlarged breasts in the age you are in. Please let me know if you are on any medication for any ailment as there are a lot of medicines which cause Gynecomastia or male breast enlargement. Do you feel the enlargement to be lumpy or a single large lump? If yes then you should get a Sonomammogram done to characterize the lesion properly. There are no medications that I can advise presently and the only definitive treatment would be surgery. You can consult a Plastic Surgeon for the same as they can remove it with minimal scarring. Take care and let me know the answers to the above so I can advise you better.

Thank you Dr. To answer your question, I used to take Toprol 25Mg and Lipitor 40 for some 6 years while I was in the US and after coming to XXXXXXX about 2 years ago I Used Metolar 50 and Rosavel 10 in place of the above. I had about 25 Avastin injection and something else to my right eye to cure CRVO while in the US. I have been using Xalatan or its generic for the last 7 years for prevention of Glaucoma. No other medications were taken. The enlargement is one large lump. Right now, I don't wish to have a surgery. any further advise? Thank you. Sincerely, XXXXXXX

Brief Answer:
Get an FNAC done.

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXXX Good to hear from you again. The medicines you have been taking are for blood pressure and lowering lipid levels. They are unlikely to cause the swelling. However the injections might have had a role in the breast enlargement. As you say it is one huge lump then given your age you should get an FNAC done even if you dont want surgery. It is called Fine Needle Aspiration Cytology and is an investigation wherein they will inject a small needle into the breast and take out some cells and see it under a microscope. It can rule out the possibility of cancer. So atleast get that done. Please do let me know if you have any clarifications and the test results as well. If there are no clarifications you can go ahead and rate the answer. Take care and look forward to advising you in the future.
