Suggest Treatment For Greenish Stools In An Infant
My son's(18 months) stools are of being greenish in colour since yesterday. its not watery or loose. and no vomiting episodes as well. No fever. and feeding is as usual too. And the frequency has not considerably changed. he usually passes motion 2-3 times a day. and today he has gone 4 times.
I was not sure if I should be reaching out for medical assistance. so wanted to take your advice.
And a couple of months before he had an episode of stomach infection and was admitted to hospital because of severe diarrhoea.
And also is it advisable to give him pre-biotic like PROMP to control the infection if there is any along with zinc supplement?
It seems to be a mild self limiting viral gastroenteritis
Detailed Answer:
Hi
Welcome to the HCM
I have gone through your question and understand your concerns. It seems to be a mild episode of viral gastroenteritis which is usually self limiting. You may take the following measures to help him out:
1. Keep him well hydrated by regular feeds and oral rehydration therapy such as lemonade, soups, buttermilk etc. In case the frequency of stools increase, then start ORS available OTC after proper constitution.
2. Start him on probiotics such as enterogermina twice daily for a week.
3. As he has no vomiting, you may also start Syp. Zinc such as zinconia or ZnD once daily for next 2 weeks. The zinc helps in early recovery.
4. Avoid sweet juices, chocolates or bakery items, because they can cause toddlers diarrhoea.
5. Also, give him a dose of Albendazole ( 200 mg) to treat any worm infestation.
There is no need for any antibiotic therapy.
Hopefully this will help you. I would be happy to help you in any further questions.
Take care
