Brief Answer:
Reflux is worse sitting or lying down

Detailed Answer:
Hello and thank you for your question.

Gastroesophageal reflux occurs more often with sitting or lying down. It has to do with the acid in the stomach coming back up the esophagus and can cause a burning sensation. When you are sitting and eating there is more pressure on your stomach so you are more likely to get reflux than when you are standing because when you are standing gravity pulls your stomach and the food down farther.

Reflux can be even worse when you are lying down again because gravity is not pulling the food and liquids down as it does when you are standing. If you try eating smaller meals you may be able to avoid the reflux when sitting down. Also alcohol, mints, caffeine and tobacco tend to make reflux worse.

Dr. Robinson

ok don't eat while lying down so not sure on that just seated but I am guilty of all 4 vices you mentioned so is it more likely them than an ulcer or something worse

i know it sounds gross but I generally have to cough up clear liquid to clear the sensation

Brief Answer:
trial of omeprazole

Detailed Answer:
Hi and thanks for your follow up. You could give yourself a trial of an omeprazole tablet taken about 30 minutes before your largest meal of the day while working on changing some of the things that tend to trigger reflux.
Good health to you
