Suggest Treatment For Gash On The Frenulum

default
Posted on Mon, 4 May 2015
Question: My friend shoved his hand in my mouth very forcefully and immediate pain occurred. I had a look and there was some blood and a large gash on my frenulum. The "string" that attatched my tongue to my mouth is gone. I do not know what to do. Will it heal? There is immense amount of pain and when I felt the bottom of my tongue with the tip of my tongue, the bottom part of the string wasn't there. As you can see in the picture, the wound is at the bottom, we asked another doctor and he said, "if duct of sublingual is safe, do not worry" i looked up the gland and i am pretty sure i still have it intact. I am still producing saliva very well if that is what it means. please help, thank you.
is it bad if i wait two or three days before i see a doctor, and do you know about what over the counter medicine to use before i do see a doctor? Thank you so much again the pain has gone down since i have slept on it
I still have the two glands at the edge of the bottom of my mouth near my teeth but i am trying to reqlly figure out if it is bad because the next time i can see a doctor is in a day or two.

Brief Answer:
There is no cause for worry.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for your query.

1. From the image the laceration is in the midline on the frenulum of the tongue.

2. The papillae of the submandibular salivary glands on either side of the frenulum to be fine.

3. Ideally, the wound should be examined directly. The cut seems to be gaping. Suturing it under local anesthesia will help it heal faster, though this will heal like this but may take longer due to the action of saliva.

4. Antibiotics, painkillers and local ointments will help ease the pain and discomfort while healing.

I hope that I have answered your query. If you have any more questions I will be available to answer them.

Regards.

Brief Answer:
Get this examined as soon as possible.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for your query.

1. It is fine if you wait 1-3 days before getting this examined, unless there is fresh bleeding or increasing pain/swelling.

2. This should heal without any treatment, but it will take longer. Suturing the edges of the mucosa (inner lining) with an absorbable suture will help heal the cut quickly. There is usually some ulceration and whitish discoloration before healing.

3. Infection can delay healing, hence a broad spectrum penicillin group antibiotic, anti-inflammatory and a local gel with an anesthetic action will help. There is no mention of your approximate location hence I cannot recommend any brand names. You will require a prescription. It is always better to take these medications under medical supervision.

I hope that I have answered your query. If you have any more questions I will be available to answer them.

Regards.
