Suggest Treatment For Gallbladder Removal When Obese

Question: Hi. I've been told that I need my Gallbladder out after a bad attack put me in the ER last weekend. I don't mind have it removed, in fact, if it means to never have to suffer that pain again, I welcome it. But, I weigh over 300lbs. (my fault entirely) and would really like to get my weight down to a less morbidly obese kind of weight. Perhaps 80-100lbs. less. The doctor wants to move on it now though, even though he said because of my weight, the Laparoscopic Surgery might not work because of fat build up, but he wouldn't know until he tried. I just want to feel safe, and I feel if I were thinner, I'd feel less nervous (terrified) about it. Like I said above, I want to have it removed if it's necessary, but want to wait till my weight's down. I'll follow ANY diet necessary to avoid a flare up, and will exercise quite happily. My question is, what's your advice?. Hope you can help. Thank you.

Detailed Answer:
Hi
I am Dr Mittal.
I have read your query.
I think I would be able to help you.

First, the surgery is not contraindicated in obese. There is no rule where it cannot be done. So you can go ahead with it now. What your surgeon told you was probably like explaining the possibility of having to open in case laparotomy doesn't work, so that they can complete the procedure on same sitting.

Secondly, I congratulate you on the decision to loose weight. The will to loose weight and staying motivated is what it's all about. There are 2 things you have to consider. One is the exercise regime and 2 is the diet. And it's in that order of importance.

I will need to know the exact diet currently And your current exercise regime to be able to help you suitably. Do enter the details.

I have tried to make it as simple as possible. I hope that the information helps you. Please feel free to contact us for more information. Best of luck. Dr Mittal.
