Suggest Treatment For Frozen Shoulder And Pain

default
Posted on Thu, 30 Jun 2016
Question: I am male, 65. I had frozen shoulder several years ago, but it went away after several months. I have been exercising, and lifting weights for over a year. Now both shoulders ache much of the time, and i hear/feel popping and cracking when i move my shoulders (this is in both shoulders equally). I am not getting good sleep because of this. Anything you can recommend?

Brief Answer:
Seems like osteoarthritis of shoulders.

Detailed Answer:
Dear Sir,

Thank you for posting your query on HCM.

Well looking into your problem I would like to tell you that considering ypur age and crackling sounds from the shoulder it seems more like osteoarthritis meaning degenerative changes in the shoulder joints that comes with age . There is no medicine to halt these changes but I would advise you to stop lifting heavy weights for a while and move to stretching exercises. If you consume alcohol limit it for a while too .

Although less likely but get an ESR done to rule out Polymyalgia rheumatica which can also give similar symptoms .You can discuss this with your treating doctor .Start taking calcium and vitamin D supplements for bone health after getting their levels done .

Take care.

Although i have the "normal" aches and pains that accompany aging, i was not really having such intense shoulder pain until a couple of months ago. The pain came on fairly gradually, but stll, a couple of months is a relatively short period. Is it normal for arthritis to become a problem that quickly? Also, is it common for the problem to occur in both shoulders simulaneously...with the same amount of pain and popping and cracking in each?

Dear Sir,

Thank you for reverting back.

Yes , arthritis can progress that quickly specially in the case when you are using the joints excessively like during exercise . Other possibilty is polymyalgia rheumatica . Best would be to get MRI of both shoulders and see whats going on . Because only after diagnosis treatment can be started .
