Suggest Treatment For Frequent Bouts Of Diarrhea

default
Posted on Tue, 2 Sep 2014
Question: Since Feb 2014, used to have bouts of diarrhea and constipation in turn. There was consistent mucous discharge with semi solid or liquid stools. Sometimes later, stool with streaks of blood or blood discharge after defecation. There has always been urge of defecation, as if though defecation is not complete. Colonoscopy showed ulcers in descending colon.biopsy reports it to be UC. Treatment with mesalamine (mesacol 1.2G twice Daily) brought relief but sigmoidoscopy done recently shows few red thin circumferential rings. Presently blood discharge at the end of defecation is there. Or there would be only mucuous discharge and the few drops of blood. Freq. of motion is 1or 2. I have read that many forms of colitis have similar symptoms, hence can it be said for sure that this is UC. What additional tests can be suggested. Can there be any other course of medicine, supposing mesalmine may not altogether be required.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

I went through the query and understood your concern.
Your presentation, investigations report and also improvement on treatment with mesalamine suggest diagnosis towards ulcerative colitis. And as the name suggests there will be ulceration along colon and hence blood, mucous discharge along with loose stools. These are the typical signs of UC.

There are multiple causes for loose stools associated with blood and mucosa but your presentation and investigation report suggests more of UC.

So no need to worry much for other diagnosis. Continue the same treatment and adhere to your doctor's advice. This will help in the management. Sulphasalasine group of drugs (mesalamine) are the drug of choice for UC. You can get done abdominal scan just to ruleout any other problem.

I hope this information answered your concern.
Feel free to ask for any further queries. I will be glad to answer them.
Wish you faster recovery and good health.

Regards
