Posted on Thu, 24 Dec 2015
Question: I fell about a week ago. My Dr. had a cat scan done. I was told I had a fractured disc of the L11 disc. He really didn't say what to do only that it would heal on.it's own. He also said he thought my fall was caused by over medicated.I have a pain pump. I haven't been to the bathroom since I fell. Would it be the medicine or the disc that is casing this problem? I did take more oral pain meds after ward due to the pain. But I have no real urge to go! Please help!

A lot of water or fluid and fibre diet can help you.

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for your query

I'm Dr Sudhir Kumar

I have gone through your query and understand your concern. You probably got fracture of T 11 vertebra ( not the disc because fracture occur in bone not in disc) . Treatment of it is rest in bed and analgesic such as ibuprofen as probably it is stable fracture. I think as you has no urge to go to bathroom (stool). It can be due to both. Medicines ( for pain) such as opioids can cause constipation. Lying down due to injury also a cause of constipation. There is no urge so it may also be possible that sufficient stool is not formed so no need to worry, take a lot of water and lot of fibre diet so that stool is formed. Liquid cremaffine 3tablespoonful at bed time is helpful in constipation. I can serve you better if you can upload CT scan. You can discuss with your doctor about it. Hope your query get answered. If you have any clarification then I will be happy to help you.

Wishing you a good health.
Take care.
